Nobody can drag him down.
One Direction isn’t the only one making new music.
It was sink or swim for One Direction several months ago when former band-member Zayn Malik announced he was leaving the band to pursue a solo career. From there, a bit of shade was thrown back and forth no thanks to the now-severed relationship between Malik and producer Naughty Boy, but all is good now.
One Direction broke records with their latest single “Drag Me Down,” becoming the fastest chart-topping song on iTunes ever and is expected to receive the highest debut in the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015 – somewhere in the Top 5 – before it’s inevitable surge to No. 1. Perhaps the success fired up Malik, who recently signed with RCA, to premiere some of his recent work. Aside from the Naughty Boy leak of Malik’s Rae Sremmurd “No Type” cover, we haven’t an idea what to expect. Just nothing like One Direction and soon.

“One Direction was never Zayn’s sort of music so he kind of always wanted to find something else,” Payne told Nick Grimshaw on the U.K.’s Radio 1 on Monday (Aug. 3). “If your heart’s not into something you can’t just carry on doing it because of fame and stuff. You have to go and do what you want to do.”
Payne congratulated Malik for pursuing his dream, saying he’s “off doing his own thing at the moment, which is cool for him.”
“There’s too much history for there not to be love,” he said. “But it’s nice that we’ve banded together and I feel like we’re stronger than ever now actually, which is strange but it’s worked out really nicely for everybody.”
Malik also split with longtime girlfriend Perry Edwards from Little Mix this week because “he just wanted to move on and start over in all ways.” No saying what this initial Tweet was about, but it’s a bit unsettling considering the circumstances.
