I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want…

Rumours have been swirling lately of a possible Spice Girls reunion in 2016, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the group’s first single.

This summer, reports surfaced claiming that the girls were indeed reuniting, but that the group would be one member short, as Posh Spice would not be taking part. The internet buzzed over the news, but rumours were laid to bed when Emma Bunton and Melanie C tweeted that they were not aware of any such reunion.

Just recently however, hope for the return of Girl Power was reborn when Geri Halliwell confirmed that there have indeed been talks of a 20th anniversay reunion. She admitted that she is open to the idea of getting back together with her former bandmates, saying “I think it’s really flattering that people are so supportive of the Spice Girls individually and collectively. It’s one of those things that have been discussed. I think it’s nice to celebrate it in some way.” Geri, aka Ginger Spice, then dished that a reunion has been discussed: “I can say that there’s been talks. That’s fair and honest.”

No word yet on what form the reunion will take. Will they go on tour? Record new music? Perform a one-off performance like at the Olympics? We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, we are brushing off our VHS copy of SpiceWorld, getting out our platform heels and contemplating the many reasons why a Spice Girls reunion is just what the world needs right now.

1. Because everytime they reunite, it’s magical

June 28th 2007. The world awoke to the amazing news that British girl group The Spice Girls were reuniting for a world tour. Tickets sold out in seconds, as everyone clamoured to see all 5 girls together on stage for the first time since 1998. The tour was everything fans wanted: joyous, fun and oozing girl power and attitude. It was the perfect celebration of their time together, filled with the hits that made them the most successful girl group of all time.

Fast forward to 4 years later, when the iconic group once again take the stage together for the closing ceremonies of the Olympics in London. It’s a brilliant, colourful, show-stopping performance, and for 4 minutes, the world is once again infected with Spice fever.

Were they to reunite again, we are certain it would be nothing short of epic.

2. Because girl power is more relevant than ever

Not to get too political, but feminism is quite the hot topic in today’s media landscape. What better way to celebrate women than to witness the return of Girl Power-crusaders The Spice Girls. They are amazing examples of strong, confident women who support each other and who have maintained powerful long-term friendships.

3. Because of the possibility of Spice World 2

Spice World: The Movie was truly one of the greatest things to happen to the world. It is a ridiculous, over the top and completely hilarious fictionalized version of the every day lives of the Spice Girls. The girls play themselves in the film and get into such shenanigans as kissing aliens from outer space, stealing a bus only to discover it’s carrying a bomb and encountering a paparazzo who pulls himself out of toilet seat to snap a picture of them.

We realize it is highly unlikely, but we can’t help but dream of a sequel.

4. Because they can now document every second of it

When they originally gained popularity back in the 90s, social media didn’t exist and fans had little chance to see behind the scenes moments between the girls. Their reunion tour in 2007 was just a tad too early for Instagram selfies and tweets as it happened on the cusp of the social media explosion. However, if they reunited today, we are certain that they would share every moment with fans: selfies, candid shots and behind the scenes videos galore!

The world can never have too many pics like this one:

The world is ready for more Zig-a-zig-ah!
