Katy Perry

Missy Elliott!

Reporting on the amount of speculation surrounding Katy Perry’s performance at the Super Bowl XLIX is getting exhausting, but this one checks out y’all. According to claims from an AP source, Katy’s special guest at this Sunday’s half-time show will be none other than Grammy award winning rapper, producer and “Last Friday Night” remixer, Missy “Get Ur Freak On” Elliott.

Find out why this makes sense after the jump:

Speaking to the Associated Press night, a supposed half-time insider revealed that the legendary rapper was set to take the stage with Perry in Arizona this weekend. Normally a pinch of salt (or indeed the whole damn seller) would be advisable with a report like this, but it seems to fit with what the “Firework” star has already told us about her old school female guest.

I wanted to bring someone back — a throwback of sorts. [Someone] that definitely needed some more shine. All I can say is that it will be a real female fun night. It’s a bit old school, yes. But when I think when this person enters the stage and when you hear the first ring of the chord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt.

Missy Elliott definitely fits the bill – the quintessential throwback, since she hasn’t had a massive hit since 2005’s “Lose Control” with Ciara and Fatman Scoop – Elliott could definitely do with a bit more ‘shine,’ as Katy puts it. Despite being one of the flyest female rappers in the game for the better part of a decade, Missy hasn’t managed to make it work in while now, so it’d be great to see her with a platform like the Super Bowl halftime show to launch herself back into the public consciousness.

And it wouldn’t be the first time the two superstars have collaborated – Missy appeared on the remix of Katy’s number one hit “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” way back in 2011 – lending more legitimacy to the idea.

At the end of the day, it’s all conjecture, isn’t it? It might be Missy Elliott, it might not, who really knows? As much sense as the rumour makes and as great as it would be for Missy, it is a little underwhelming. Not to diminish Missy Elliott’s talent or success – as well as being a bad-*** rapper, she’s also one of the sickest producers out there – but there have definitely been more exiting names thrown about. We’ll just have to tune in on Sunday to find out for sure.

Thank God it’s Friday indeed, because that means only three more days of the seemingly endless guesses about who’s joining KP on stage this Sunday.

What do you think? Missy Elliott: touchdown or fumble?
