The track was originally intended for Adele.

UPDATE // JULY 27: Sia’s next single off This Is Acting is reportedly “Bird Set Free,” which she began performing and promoting in November of last year. According to Music Week, the song will get sent to radio on September 2.

Perfect timing, considering Sia’s latest release “Cheap Thrills” featuring Sean Paul topped the charts this week.

Sia’s voice soars in song originally written for Adele.

Yesterday, Sia revealed the cover art for her new album This is Acting set to be released January 29th. Today, she released the second single off the album: “Bird Set Free”, an empowering track about speaking up and finding one’s voice despite people trying to keep you down. Sia belts out the chorus:

No I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free

The Australian singer’s new album is composed entirely of songs written for other artists and this song is no exception, having been penned originally for Adele. Sia revealed in an interview with Ryan Seacrest that Adele recorded the single, but then decided not to include it on her album because she kept being told that the track “just sounds like a Sia song”.

This song wasn’t Sia’s only attempt at getting one of her songs on Adele’s upcoming album. Sia’s first single “Alive”, which was co-written by Adele, was also initially intended for the British singer.
