EARLIER // NOVEMBER 17:
This is her revival.
The gripping pressures from fame took a toll on the pop star, who cancelled the duration of her Revival Tour earlier this year to focus on her mental health. She reportedly checked into a rehab facility outside of Nashville to battle “anxiety, panic attacks and depression.”
“Selena is dealing with lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health,” said a source close to the pop star. “She can go to a very dark place.” The treatment center is described as a “private and quiet place,” but “super intense.”
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” she told People. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
She continued, “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
Gomez was very outspoken about recording new material to followup 2015’s pop opus Revival, but life events also put her recording plans on hold. A source added, “she was supposed to be recording, but she hasn’t told anyone when she’ll be back in studio.”
Well it appears Gomez is re-energized. According to E! News, the “Trust Nobody” singer may attend the American Music Awards on Sunday where she’s nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and the top prize: Artist of the Year, against Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Carrie Underwood. The show’s producer Larry Klein told E! that the pop star “might” make an appearance. A separate source told them she would indeed be there.
The AMAs air Sunday, Nov. 20 at 8:00pm ET on ABC.
