Is Rihanna planning a surprise album release?

Def Jam posted a photo of Rihanna with a diamond emoji, leading fans to wonder if that’s a clue R9 is near.

Prior to this, Rihanna trolled fans over the weekend saying she’s listening to her new album, but refuses to release it.

“update: me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it,” she wrote in a caption on Instagram with a video of a dog rocking out.

It’s worth mentioning there might actually be two different records on the way.

“We always went into the music this time around saying that we were going to do two different pieces of art,” Rihanna said in an interview with Vogue.

“One was gonna be inspired by the music that I grew up listening to. And one was gonna be the evolution of where I’m going next with music.”

Rihanna grew up listening to reggae, so her ninth album will be heavily influenced by that genre.

“I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album,” Rihanna said. “It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks.”

She added: “Reggae always feels right to me. It’s in my blood. It doesn’t matter how far or long removed I am from that culture, or my environment that I grew up in; it never leaves. It’s always the same high. Even though I’ve explored other genres of music, it was time to go back to something that I haven’t really homed in on completely for a body of work.”

Rihanna recently registered a song titled “Private Loving.”

  1. I’m kinda scared. Don’t know which one I’m more scared of. I’m not a fan of reggae tho I love ‘Man Down’. And the word “evolution” scares me. I don’t want an artsy albuuum. ANTI was great but I don’t want none of that anymore. I want LOUD and GGGB and TTT. Enough of all these artsy culture woke music like LEMONADE and ANTI. Give me the B’Days. 😭😭😭

      1. I know. 😢 They feel like having something to say and going political makes you a better artist. Can it just be about making good music that doesn’t mean anything at all. Like, “I Want It That Way”. 😞

  2. Kind of off-topic, but the fact that she was able to be on the cover of Vogue with her own clothing brand is such an accomplishment. That has to feel so rewarding to her.
