Jeffrey Chan’s ’80s-inspired song titled “Breathe Heavy” is the best thing you’ll see all day.

An honor! Chan is an independent artist who created a campy video for a song inspired by this very site. It’s got an infectious beat and slinky synths mastered by Julian Lowe (Sugababes, Amy Winehouse) and marks the second release off the singer’s forthcoming sophomore record, FaultLine, out later this year.

“‘Breathe Heavy’ came about as I started to explore different ideas and more mature themes for this new record,” Chan tells BH. “When I write my songs I sometimes take elements of real life and fantasy and mesh those up; and that’s what you’ve got here. I essentially wanted to write my own version of [Britney Spears’] ‘Breathe On Me’ or something as **** and fun as ‘3’, with my own twist on it.”

Mission accomplished.

The intro of the video also features an obvious nod to Queen B. See if you can spot it.

“Britney has been such a huge inspiration on me, and was actually one of the reasons for me wanting to become an artist in the first place,” Chan continued. “I remember watching her performances and music videos when I was younger and just being in awe of her stage presence and performance abilities. I decided to do a nod to ‘…Baby One More Time’ in the video because it was essentially the soundtrack to my entire childhood (and also because I don’t think I would’ve rocked a red latex suit pretty well). She always strived to be better and to out-do herself, and she’s always growing; hopefully something that is reflected in my work too.”

He adds: “‘Breathe Heavy’ is a fun track that’s just one part of who I am as an artist. It’s a song that’s about letting go of your inhibitions and worries, and giving into your instincts. I just want people to have fun with this song and video, and feel a sense of nostalgia as they get a blast from the past.”
