Happy New Music Weekend*
Every Friday, the music industry bombards the stream waves with new tunes. There’s too many to keep up with, so BreatheHeavy’s answer to that is our New Music Friday post (honestly, we’re just not that interested in writing 20 individual posts every Friday morning, and it appears you’re not that interested in reading 20 individual posts every Friday morning). We’re renaming this weekly post beginning today to New Music Weekend, because you probably won’t even get around to reading this until Sunday night when the Monday blues creep in. Now that that’s out of the way…
Zayn – Icarus Falls (Album)
Zayn dropped a 27-track album today titled Icarus Falls. I haven’t had the chance to check it out in full quite yet, but best believe this record is at the top of my list. The former One Directioner released a good chunk of it leading up to the release, and those songs were legitimately solid and cohesive. An LP littered with bedroom bops. I stan:
Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson – “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” (Song)
Miley and Mark Ronson continue making music magic together. Following their collab with “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” is a cover John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” Their son, Sean Ono Lennon, gives his seal of approval by adding vocals to the track. Miley gushed about working with Sean during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show. “I mean, he’s just such an incredible being to be in the room with because that magic just radiates,” she said. “And I have always loved John and Yoko, I’m such a big Yoko fan, and so it’s just been amazing to work with him and his voice is just so special.”
Allie X – “Last Christmas” (Song)
Rising pop sensation, Allie X, transformed Wham’s iconic holiday classic, “Last Christmas,” into a synthy, sugary pop banger. You probably never want to hear another cover of this song ever again, but Allie X really did that.
Elton John and Khalid – “Young Dumb & Broke” (Song)
I am pleasantly surprised. Elton John and Khalid teamed up for a re-working of the latter’s biggest hit, and it’s bouncy and vivacious. The two recorded it together as part of a special session for Spotify. How did this come about? “I discovered Khalid’s music a few years ago, and have been a fan ever since,” Elton explained. “We finally met when I played his home town of El Paso last year. It’s a thrill to be a small part of any new artists’ journey, and it’s been wonderful to see his star continue to rise and rise. ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ is a fabulous song, one of my favorites and I’m really pleased that he liked my cover enough to contribute vocals.”
Robin Thicke – “Testify” (Song)
Robin Thicke has had a tough couple of years following the height of “Blurred Lines,” and he acknowledges his hardships on “Testify,” Thicke’s first proper release in two years. On it, Thicke shows off his soaring falsetto as he sings about his vulnerabilities. “When I made this record I wanted to sing my whole truth and lead off the new album singing my *** off,” he said. Preach, Robin.
Brooke Candy and Ojivolta – “Oomph” (Song)
“Oomph” is wild. Brooke Candy offers a one-two punch on the Ojivolta-assisted banger. Its sporadic beat weaves in and out of digitized synths while futuristic laser beams slice across the stream accompanied by a tinny drum. “This the kinda beat that make you crack,” Brooke affirms on the track. No lies detected.
