New Music Friday: Cher, Kylie Minogue, Vanessa Hudgens, Lil Wayne, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj And More
Happy New Music Friday: September 28, 2018!
On Fridays, music lovers are inundated with new songs and videos. Instead of posting about each item individually (yay efficiency), we figured a roundup would be best. Here’s this week’s New Music Friday highlights:
Cher – Dancing Queen (Album)
*Uncontrollably shakes and cries.* Cher’s ABBA cover album, Dancing Queen, has officially arrived for your streaming pleasure. It’s uplifting, vibrant, excessive, nostalgic and luxurious. I wonder what Madonna thinks about all of this.
Vanessa Hudgens – “Lay With Me” (Song)
Vanessa Hudgen’s new song, “Lay With Me,” feels like something straight out of 2008 (that’s a very, very good thing). On the guilty pleasure pop gem, Vanessa finds herself singing about the rush of falling in love. “Just the thought of letting go, makes me wanna pull you closer,” she croons over a Phantoms-produced beat. “Close enough so you can whisper every line.” There’s also a video for the track on the way. Bless you Godgens for this new tune.
Kylie Minogue – “What You Waiting For” (Song)
Kylie returns to her electro dance-pop roots on “What You Waiting For” off Sigala’s new album, Brighter Days. Don’t get me wrong – I was pleasantly surprised with Golden, but Kylie’s Joanne can’t hold a candle to her earlier stuff. “What You Waiting For” is a nod to the early days. On it, the Australian pop princess sings of impatience before free-falling down the rabbit hole that some like to call love. The vibey beat and hollow piano melody is the perfect amount of chill to walk us into the cooler months.
Lil Wayne – Tha Carter V (Album)
Lil Wayne just dropped a star-studded album. It features Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Travis Scott, Ashanti and Nivea, and vocals from XXXTentacion, among others. It’s worth mentioning Wayne tried releasing this album in 2012, but label delays forced the iconic rapper to hold off… until now. “I am a prisoner and so is my creativity,” Wayne tweeted at the time. “I am truly sorry and I don’t blame ya if ya fed up with waiting 4 me & this album,” he added. What’s interesting is it’s unclear when the majority of the songs were recorded – Wayne was reportedly recording even up through this week. Give it a play below:
Jessie J – This Christmas Day (Album announcement)
It’s not even October, and Jessie J has announced her new holiday album, This Christmas Day. Marketing! The singer is covering a bunch of Christmas classics, and includes some massive collaborations (David Foster, Babyface, Rodney Jerkins, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Boyz II Men). Christmas shopping DONE.
