Happy New Music Friday (December 7–9)!

We’re nearing the end of 2018, which means the blogosphere is reflecting on all the tunes that hit the net throughout the year, but the influx of songs continues. We put together a list of some new songs/videos worth your undivided attention.

Natalie Portman – “Wrapped Up”

Yup. Actress Natalie Portman released a new Sia-penned ballad titled “Wrapped Up.” It’s an original soundtrack song to support Portman’s new film, Vox Lux, in which she plays a pop star named Celeste. “Hey, turn the light on / Cause I’ve got no one to show me the way,” Portman sings in the opening. “Please, I will follow / Because you’re my last hope, I’ll do anything you say.” The track doesn’t mention whether Sia’s vocals are featured or not, but my ears definitely hear her. It’s a pretty inspiring ballad, but I have a feeling A Star Is Born will eclipse this.

Zayn – “Good Years”

Zayn’s new album, Icarus Falls, drops December 14. The latest release is “Good Years,” a song about regret. Fans are under the impression it’s about Zayn’s time in One Direction. “Too much drugs and alcohol / What the hell were we fighting for?” he sings over a somber piano melody. “Cuz now the whole damn world will know / That we’re too numb and just too dumb to change the story / Neither one, one of us wants to say we’re sorry.” Tensions flared amongst 1D fans when Louis Tomlinson Tweeted: “Proper confused. What a hypocrite!” He didn’t mention Zayn, but we can read between the lines. I think. Now I’m confused, too.

Eminem featuring Jessie Reyez – “Good Guy” (Music Video)

Em released a video for his latest Kamikaze cut. “Good Guy,” featuring Jessie Reyez, is the bright and sunny visual you’d expect from Eminem during the holiday season. Just kidding, it’s ominous and dark with a killer ending. Literally.

Michelle Willams – “Fearless” (Song)

Michelle Williams just split up with ex-fiancé Chad Johnson. In her personal life, the Destiny’s Child is likely feeling pain and sorrow, but her new tune is anything but. “Fearless” is a soaring power ballad about free falling into love. “I know you’re scared of heights / But take the jump anyway and you won’t regret it” she croons over a thumping beat. “Because there’s a passion moving at the speed of light.” Stay strong and fearless:

Astrid S – “Closer” (Song)

I hope you’re not sick of ballads. Norwegian pop star Astrid S just released one of her own. On “Closer,” Astrid sings about being the other woman. Too relatable. “I think we both know that you should tell her / Kiss of my perfume is still on your sweater,” she croons over an icy piano melody and plunky strings. “This is the last time, it’s for the better.” Keep Astrid on your radar:
