Music lost a legend.

Late Sunday night (Jan. 10), news broke David Bowie had passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer. To many, his passing seemed sudden. Bowie had just released his new album Blackstar, has an Off Broadway show named “Lazarus” and was to be honored at Carnegie Hall with a concert featuring the Roots, Cyndi Lauper and the Mountain Goats on March 31.

The statement read: “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Since then, artists have taken to social media to express their condolences, including Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Sia, The Weeknd, Diane Warren, Linda Perry The Foo Fighters, Nile Rodgers and more.

I'm devastated.David Bowie changed the course of my life forever. I never felt like I fit in growing up in Michigan….

"Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever." – Paul Photo of Paul and David Bowie by @LindaMcCartney 1985 #PaulMcCartney #DavidBowie
