I can’t believe Gwen, 48, said that.
“I’m obviously at the end of my journey of being a musician… because of my age.”
I can’t believe Gwen, 48, said that. The pop star gushed about her upcoming Las Vegas residency and her love of performing, but in the process said something extremely problematic and very disappointing. She believes she’s approaching the end of her career as an artist because of her age.
“Being onstage for me, I always forget how much it is a part of who I am,” she said. “I’ve done it for my whole life pretty much. I always think I don’t want to do it. I always think it’s fine if I never do it again, and then, when I get onstage, even when I’m soundchecking, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I love this! I love my music, I love being up here, I love the attention and I love being able to share that love with people and get that exchange’.
Gwen added: “I don’t understand why I like it so much. It is in me. It’s my gift. It’s what I’m here for. So this is perfect.”
Then, the bomb: “But I’m obviously at the end of my journey of being a musician… because of my age.”
“It’s perfect for me to be able to do a Vegas show because not only does it work for me as a mom, but it also works creatively,” she adds. “It’s new, it’s a challenge. It’s going to be a way to express myself and do my whole catalogue of the music that defines every single time period in my life and the crises and all the joys. Creatively, I couldn’t have done it any sooner. I had to have all these songs. It just feels like the perfect next chapter for me.”
I’d like to point out several things: plenty of her peers (JLo, Madonna, Janet Jackson, CHER etc.) are still killing it and would NEVER EVER say something like this. It sends a message to young women that going for your dreams has an expiration date.
I’m hoping the “Hollaback Girl” issues some sort of clarification about this, because this sounds very un-Gwen Stefani like. Ladies, if you are reading this, be 80-years-old and do the damn thing, K?
