Taylor Swift to the rescue!

Taylor Swift to the rescue!

Hayley Kiyoko just released her seriously great new album titled Expectations (stream below). She’s making the rounds in the press right now, and one of her interviews exploded after fans misinterpreted her words about Taylor Swift.

Speakign with Refinery29, Kiyoko said, “I’ve had several music industry execs say, ‘You’re doing another music video about girls? I literally looked at them and was like, um, yeah… Taylor Swift sings about men in every single song and video, and no one complains that she’s unoriginal.”

Some felt like that was a dig at Tay Tay, but the Reputation singer was quick to clear the air.

“We should applaud artists who are brave enough to tell their honest romantic narrative through their art, and the fact is that I’ve never encountered homophobia and she has,” Swift wrote on Tumblr. “It’s her right to call out anyone who has double standards about gay vs straight love interests.”

Swift is all too familiar with this narrative. In a 2014 interview with Time, Swift pointed out male artists like Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars write about their girlfriends / exes all the time and aren’t criticized for it.
