Lady Gaga burst into tears upon winning Best Actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2019.
Awards season is still heating up, and Gaga bags yet another prestigious trophy. Gaga won Best Actress for her role as Ally in A Star Is Born. She tied with Glenn Close.
During her acceptance speech, Gaga invited Close to stand next to her, but Close didn’t budge. Instead, Gaga soaked up the spotlight alone.
“I’m so honored by this. I went to places in my mind and in my heart that I did not know existed…this is a tremendous honor,” she told the audience. “I feel recognized not just for my performance but for the inner work it took in the creation of this character.”
Gaga explained the role was “one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. To relive something that I’m not quite sure I wanted to relive but I was able to be vulnerable in a way that I never have before because of that love and that trust.”
The pop star finished her speech to a standing ovation as she dedicated the win to people struggling with alcoholism – one of the gut wrenching themes throughout the Bradley Cooper-directed film. “I wanted nothing more to show the truth and power of this very heartbreaking dynamic.”
Gaga and Cooper’s song “Shallow” also took home the win for best song.
