Justin Bieber got dibs on recording “For You” with Rita Ora for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack first.

Unfortunately, that did not pan out, so the label tapped Liam Payne. That’s a real shame.

A source dished the dirt to the Daily Star:

“Originally Universal Pictures wanted Justin Bieber to sing a song on the soundtrack, either with or without Rita,” they said. “He’s the biggest male pop star in the world and so that’s what they aimed for.”

They added: “They had the world’s biggest female pop star in Taylor Swift do the last film, so they were keen for something a bit different because Zayn Malik sang that with her and he comes from One Direction as well.”

Interestingly, the site reports that Bieber couldn’t commit to recording the track with or without Rita because “after a turbulent 14-month concert tour Justin [was] intent on having a break and made it clear he would not be taking on any extra recording commitments.”

Well this is awkward, because in the time since ending his tour to take said break, Bieber released a string of songs, including one with DJ Khaled (“I’m The One”), Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee (“Despacito”) and Bloodpop (“Friends”).

I’m a bit bummed about this. Liam Payne’s presence on the track is useless – Rita could have handled it all on her own. And to think she was this close to scoring a feature with the Biebs.

No Bieber, no hit!
