On the outside looking in.

Julia Michaels and her significant other trade “Issues.”

Michaels has written some of the biggest pop records in the last few years (Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” Britney Spears’ “Slumber Party,” Selena Gomez’s “Hands To Myself,” Ed Sheeran’s “Dive,” Fifth Harmony’s “All In My Head,” Kelly Clarkson’s “War Paint”), so it seems a little unfair to say she suddenly burst onto the scene with her fluttery pop gem, “Issues.” The song currently sits at No. 27 on the Hot 100, and a newly-premiered music video for the track will give it a much-needed boost.

In the visual, Michaels is literally on the outside looking in at her dissolving relationship. In one scene, the 23-year-old is the life of the party while everyone else around her appears dazed and aloof. When she simmers down, the party-goers turn up. At times she can love just like that, then leaves just as fast.

“It really is all of the issues I deal with on a daily basis. I felt uncomfortable with someone else singing my life,” the rising pop star told Music Week as to why she decided to keep the song for herself. “It’s my life when I sing these words. It’s one thing to write it and another to emote it.”
