It’s a big week for Monae. The singer’s Dirty Computer “emotion picture” drops this Thursday on MTV and BET before the album’s official release on Friday (April 27), but before that… fans get one more video treatment – it’s a time-bending clip for “I Like That.”

The song is the most honest Monae has been thus far. “You know this is an extremely vulnerable album and it took me a while to make it because I’m a self editor,” she recently revealed. “I self edit myself a lot. I’m like I don’t want to talk about this, I don’t want to talk about that. I had to kind of have people at Wonderland on my team to hold me accountable to it. They were like OK, you said you wanted to make this album before your first album, this is the opportunity for you to just really choose honesty over mystery. I know that there are a lot of things that I haven’t discussed and I think this is the album that you’ll get an opportunity to get a closer glimpse into my mind and into my heart.”

There are several shining, earnest moments on “I Like That.”  “Uh, I remember when you laughed when I cut my perm off,” she croons. “And you rated me a six / I was like, “Damn” / But even back then with the tears in my eyes / I always knew I was the s–t.”

The clip is a visual feast. In it, Monae stands alone in a theater wearing an avant-garde headdress and keeping her self company with multiple versions of herself – elsewhere she’s naked soaking in a tub of murky-white water and chilling next to a peacock. The contrast is striking.
