For Pride Month, Mr. Mraz penned a love letter to the LGBTQ community. In the final lines, he wrote “We still have a long way to go. / But know I am bi your side.”
BI your side. Slick.
If you’ve been following JM for a minute, you’d know this. He told Genre magazine in 2005 that he was “bisexually open-minded.”
Billboard posted a new interview with Mraz today, and he doubles down.
“I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife,” he said. Mraz married his second wife, Christina Carano, in 2015.
“It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?’ And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two-spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that.”
Let me get this straight (heh): did he just admit to cheating on his wife early on with a man? Does that mean people who are attracted to one sex are ‘one-spirit?’ What do the Native Americans have to say about that? Asking for a friend.
As NewNextNow points out, that term is actually a bit problematic. “Though Mraz likes the term two-spirit, it’s worth noting that the label is unique to the Native American community and carries huge cultural and spiritual significance. Those who aren’t Native American are generally discouraged from self-identifying as such.”
Regardless, call me, king.
