Throwback Gwen.

Gwen Stefani has the cure.

Linda Perry is one of the best songwriters in the biz. That’s why I decided to individually highlight a few of the gems she released onto the Served Like a Girl documentary soundtrack out today (Nov. 3).

Listen to Christina Aguilera’s “America” here and P!nk’s “Halfway Gone” here.

The next to receive the special BH spotlight? Gwen Stefani. She teamed up with Perry for 2004’s “What You Waiting For?,” but that’s only a sliver of what they made together. Most of what songwriters and singers create together gets left on the cutting room floor, but Perry decided to salvage some of them. Linda wrote a song for Gwen titled “Medicine Man,” a somber, acoustic number that finds the pop star crooning about not being enough.

“So I can’t be your wise man / And I can’t be your saint,” she sings over a sugary guitar melody. “No, I can’t be your prophet / Or your medicine man.” It’s really beautiful, and extra special knowing it has probably lived in the shadows for more than a decade.
