The world of Britney is a mysterious place. Here’s what you need to know.

After allegations from BritneysGram came to light, claiming the pop star was placed in a mental heath facility in mid-January against her will, the Britney Army has been engulfed in a tidal wave of misinformation, conspiracies and speculation. The unfortunate situation united the fanbase in ways I’ve never seen. A colossal thread in Exhale with more than 20,000 replies documenting the last week has remained active day and night, because in the time since things became lost in translation. Here’s a breakdown:

Britney returns with a vengeance

After staying out of sight for nearly all of 2019, Britney suddenly re-emerged. On the outside, it looks like paparazzi were tipped off about her whereabouts on Easter Sunday. The pop star was photographed walking out the main entrance of a Beverly Hills hotel with her boyfriend, Sam Asghari. It seemed suspicious Britney was able to evade photographers all year long, but when her free will was vigorously questioned – there she was.

That was the catalyst for several more appearances. The #FreeBritney movement became so immense, it prompted the pop star to then record a video saying “all is well.” She captioned the clip warning fans to stop harassing her team and family, and to not believe everything they read, including what she calls fake emails crafted by ex-manager Sam Lutfi. Curiously, the emails mentioned in the post were not once reported on by any outlet. If we were to believe Britney wrote them, they paint a negative portrayal of her handlers, including manager Larry Rudolph, business manager Lou Taylor and dad Jamie. Lutfi remains adamant that the emails are authentic.

The following day, Britney was once again photographed – getting frozen yogurt. A short while later, Britney’s Instagram account posted a video of her working out and dancing in the gym inside her mental health facility.

Conflicting stories

The narrative surrounding Britney’s mental health facility stay has taken twists and turns.

Initially, Britney said she had to postpone ********** to care for her dad, who became seriously ill after his colon spontaneously ruptured.

BritneysGram’s paralegal source refuted that, claiming the actual reason the show was pulled was due to Britney refusing to take her medication, so Mr. Spears pulled the plug.

It is believed Britney quit taking the medication because when her initial meds stopped working, doctors prescribed her a new cocktail of pills, which made her feel terrible – so she stopped entirely.

Here’s where things become very unclear. A previous report from The Blast, who claims to have insight from a source with direct knowledge of the situation, said the situation became so dire with Britney that her team feared if she did not seek medical treatment, she could die. This directly conflicts with the report that Britney checked herself in. Elsewhere, it is claimed Britney ultimately made the decision to seek treatment, but was resistant at first.

The Blast:

“We’re told Spears’ father realized how bad the situation was and made the ultimate decision for her to enter a treatment facility, and everyone on the team felt it was the right move for him to ‘take action’.”

“What’s more, we’re told Jamie is adamant — he did not want his daughter to go to the facility because he thought it would leak out to the media and he felt there were better ways of solving her problems. We’re told Britney is the one who said she wanted to go “

Jamie Lynn

Part of Britney’s outrage was certainly due to the harassment her little sister received in light of the movement. Some Britney fans demanded answers, and when they didn’t get them, began posting vile comments on JL’s Instagram posts. It angered JL so much she shared a video from 2007 yelling at a woman outraged at Britney’s celebrity.

“10 years ago, who was there?? I have been here long before anyone else, and I’ll be here long after. I love my sister with everything I have,” she said. “So, anyone or anything that speaks to the contrary can GTFOH with all the comments about what you don’t understand. Do not come for me or the ones I love anymore. You can move the ‘blank’ outta here with all that, just like this other lady who was running her mouth.”

Sam Asghari

Britney’s boyfriend ran into cameramen from TMZ on his way out of a parking structure this week. He wanted to reassure fans that she’s doing “amazing,” and there’s nothing to worry about.

On Instagram, Asghari said the best way to show Britney support is to respect her privacy.

Britney’s beloved assistant, Felicia Culotta, low-key weighed in on the #FreeBritney movement. Britney fansite Absolute Britney posted the following, and Fe “liked” it.

“We want Britney to have full privacy. We don’t care about her medical or private history. It’s none of our business. What we want is an honest, ethical, legal investigation into the conservatorship to make sure Britney’s human rights aren’t being violated or abused. The conservatorship is public record and anybody can look into it!”

Britney’s release

After finishing treatment, Britney has been released, according to a new report from TMZ who has a photo of her exit. Sam Asghari was said to have picked up the pop star and escorted her back to her home in Thousand Oaks.

A new conservatorship status hearing

The media began to misconstrue the purpose of the #FreeBritney movement. Reports claimed fans wanted to bail Britney out from treatment because of the allegations that she was being held there against her will, however the overarching message dealt more with the restraints of the conservatorship, not treatment.

The million dollar question that’s remained in the back of fans’ minds for more than a decade: if she can work, give interviews, make albums and tour, are conservatorships for her financial and personal affairs necessary? Not accurately knowing the situation in full has clouded fans’ judgement, however the question has never been answered to fans’ liking. That could very well change.

There was enough outrage to inspire the courts to schedule a new status hearing to address the conservatorship. A judge set it for May 10th. Britney’s presence is not required. It’s worth noting this hearing was scheduled after the #FreeBritney controversy made national news.

Ultimately, this was the end-goal for the #FreeBritney movement. It’s unlikely Britney’s legal arrangement will change as a result, however for fans wanting what they feel is justice for their fav, and potentially a step towards dissolving the conservatorship which bars the pop star from driving, hiring her own doctors or lawyers, and other basic freedoms, this was a major win.
