Frank Ocean’s Valentine’s Day gift arrived in the 11th hour.

Frank Ocean’s Valentine’s Day gift arrived in the 11th hour.

Mr. Ocean waited until the last possible second to gift fans with his sparse, stripped cover of “Moon River” on the Hallmark holiday. It arrived without warning on YouTube and Tumblr in the wee hours of Thursday morning (Feb. 15).

As NPR points out, the 1961 original, by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, was written for Audrey Hepburn to sing in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and has been covered over the years by Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Elton John, Morrissey, R.E.M., the Killers and more.

Frank’s version is fragile and delicate, boasting a syrupy tone over a lingering bass line. It’s pretty special.
