Samantha Mumba might be one of the most mysterious pop stars of our generation. The Irish born singer burst onto the music scene at just 17 years old and took the world by storm. Her sultry voice and undeniable stage presence helped sky rocket her to the top of the charts in 2000. With a lineup of hit singles from her debut album, Gotta Tell You, the "Always Come Back To Your Love" singer seemed to be on top of the music industry. Mumba went on to top the charts in several countries, earned a Grammy Award nomination and even landed a starring role in 2002's blockbuster hit, The Time Machine. But even with all of her commercial success, a resume that most artists could only ever dream of, the singer seemed to step away from the music scene after plans of her follow up album seemed to be shelved by her record label. Fast forward to today, twenty years since her debut, and we were still asking: what the heck happened to Samatha Mumba? We got the chance to hang out with Samantha (virtually, of course) to discuss everything from her first album to her highly anticipated sophomore album. So, embracing the pop music fans that we are, we couldn't resist starting off our sit down (which included delicious glasses of wine) with the most popular question from our oh so curious readers. We asked, "what happened?" And the answer might be less dramatic than you'd expect. "There's no huge drama or horrendous thing," says Mumba who was glowing during out chat. "I very much so got caught in a merge when all of the labels kind of condensed into two and three large labels. My entire team was wiped out so I had all new people around me and they were kind of walking on eggshells as well. Nobody's jobs were secure and it was just kind of a weird time." "So, I was shelved," says Mumba. "The label wouldn't release music but I was still bound to my contract. So, I was in that for a couple of years before I was actually released." The singer was all smiles as went on to say that she discussed her hiatus from the music business. She was able to live a relatively normal life away from the lens of entertainment industry. She's got married and is loving being a mom to her adorable mini-me, her five year old daughter, Sage. Mumba is ready to make her highly anticipated comeback and is calling all of the shots this time around. The singer is releasing new music under her own independent label, a direction that more old school artists are going in. (You may remember that Brandy recently found success by releasing her latest album independently as well). And she's making up for lost time by quenching our thirst with not one, but two comeback singles. The **** mid-tempo "Cool" and the inspirational ballad "Process." "I think for me, this is my first time releasing everything under my own label. Doing everything independently myself and so I'm kind of getting a kick out of the fact that the rules don't apply," she said. "I can kind of be bold and release two singles." "It's just very much so a vibe that I just love," Mumba said about the first of the two new singles, "Cool." She went on to describe the single as "a fun bop" and said that she can't wait to perform it in the clubs. She also described the **** music video as a visual about "body empowerment" and "self worth." The album's second single, "Process," is an inspirational ballad shows a softer side of the singer. And although it was written before Covid, the song is an uplifting track during this pandemic. "And then, 'Process' is something that is so dear to my heart," says Mumba. "And I felt that if I didn't release it now, it just wouldn't be a single. And the timing and just everything everybody has been through this year. We're just all so in the same boat together. It's been a bad year for everybody. It sucks." Mumba expressed her optimism about things getting better for the world soon. "But like anything that sucks and is **** in life, it doesn't stay that way forever," Samantha says. "And it does change." We also chatted with Samantha about her favorite memories from her first album, her new music, motherhood and female empowerment in the music business. This is the comeback fans of 2000's pop music have been waiting for. And, if there's any doubt about Samantha's star power, we'll leave you with this: it's been twenty years since her debut and the singer's legacy is still undeniable and her songs remain timeless. Recently, Billboard named "Gotta Tell You" as one of the Greatest Choruses of the 21st Century; a feat that most artists could only dream of. Their tracklist includes "Mood Ring" + Remixes + "Swimming In The Stars" and ANOTHER new song called "Matches." It's rumored to feature the Backstreet Boys. The music video was directed by David Fincher and is marked as the ultimate synthesis of fashion and music. The video features five of the era’s top supermodels – Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz. The inspiration for the video came after George spotted Peter Lindbergh’s January 1990 cover of British Vogue.   18. "Trapped." (two minute read) Within the span of three years [2018-2020] Grande has accomplished any recent female artists would've done, releasing three albums consecutively. And today, she delivered her newest offering in follow-up to her side jobs with Bieber and Gaga, to named a few of her collaborators. The sixth installment of Grande's brand kicked off with the release of title track single, positions. It introduces a sultry take of God is a woman, while dressed up as the first lady of the White House for appropriation. Sonically, the lead song follows the acoustic elements of Stuck With U. And between the two, positions is obviously the underdog. The obvious influences of hip-hop genre to Grande has became prominent overtime. While the trap sound is gradually becoming the new pop trend, the overused of these style and production are what the album's greatest issues. Most of the tracks end up having a very similar sound. And although the production is ambitiously mixed with other instrumentations, that effort is not not enough to rescue the potential bangers; shut up and love language for example. As Grande started to drawn herself into songwriting and self-producing, positions demonstrates the lack of progressive direction. Most tracks share identical songwriting style and analogies of being too conversational. The absence of depth and figurative topics make the album's narrative less enjoyable despite the insightful opening tracks. Even the use of vile words sound rushed, and generalizing a very ridiculous idea. The production efforts with some of the tracks exceptionally stand out, but the lyrics are too off-putting to reconsider them as bangers. shut up and my hair embrace this common flaw, and both share an awkward hook: How you been spending your time? (How?) How you be using your tongue? (How?) You be so worried 'bout mine (Mine) Can't even get yourself none You know you sound so dumb (So dumb, so dumb) You know you sound so dumb (So dumb) (lyrics taken from "shut up") Grande's enunciation is one of her signatures. And despite the severity of mumbling, it surprisingly suits the some of the tracks such as 34+35, just like magic and nasty, heightening the swag-gy and playful attitudes. Still, the subtlety of her pronunciation is one of the things she has to improve regardless. Moreover, some of the tracks still manage to showcase greater potentials; like the closing ballad, pov, a reminder of Grande's soaring vocal abilities that's missing in the album, and the flirtatious take to 7 rings, 34+35, that implies a chant-y and clever chorus. Disappointingly, she has failed to redeem herself from the featured track's disaster since the Sweetener era. Like the monotonous attempt of the Weeknd's off the table, and the predictable rap verse of Cat, motive ends up one of those urban songs. safety net shares a different light though, arguably one of the best tracks but featured a wrong collaborator. The lack of theme also makes the record indistinctive. Take the kinky and **** appeal of Dangerous Woman, the recovery and healing of Sweetener, and the romantic frustrations of thank u, next. positions' somewhat started with another **** attempt she's been doing over the years. It has no identity or story to begin with, to captivate it's listeners. Grande is probably at the point of comforting herself to a follow up, instead of finding a progressive sound. It isn't a bad thing at all, reinventing artistic image is not a requirement for any artists to be interesting. Some artists have a more tentative core, while others are conventional. In general, releasing positions is a very brave decision to follow up thank, u next, considering how big her fifth album has become. It's probably not a highlight in her career, but still a tolerating gift to those who enjoy her discography.   19. It is very common to encounter a record that needs a few good listening-s and time before making your very last decision towards it. Here are the albums that thoroughly changed my opinions overtime: Teenage Dream by Katy Perry Out of Katy's discography, this is the very first record from her that I get tired of. I used to like it but after some time, I feel like it's more of a compilation album that an actual one because of how big the production of each tracks are. It also gave me the idea that LP is just an excuse to market the singles. Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne Just based off the lead single, I really had high hopes for Avril's comeback project. I regularly listened to it after the release but only within a month or so, I realized how underwhelming the rest of the tracks are. I still love some of them but Dumb Blonde, Goddess, Love Me Insane and Warrior are just terribly written. Labrinth, Sia, Diplo Present... LSD by LSD After hearing one of their single from a toothpaste commercial, I literally tracked that song down which brought me to this record. I immediately dismissed the album though after giving it a few listens, but my stupidity always surprised. I mean, it's one of the best records I've heard with a psychedelic aesthetic. They deserve more credits though! What about yours?

(one minute read) The Manchester Arena Bombing has successfully shaken not just the public security against terrorism, but as well the artistic image of Ariana Grande. Ever since her musical debut back in 2013, Grande has been struggling to establish her figure as one of the new pop heirs. And in follow-up to her 2016's third full-length record, Dangerous Woman, Grande has distanced herself from the black & white persona, projecting a more uplifting side of her spectrum. While Sweetener favored by critics, earning a staggering 81/100 Metacritic score, most people shared different insights towards the album. Even some noted that the production is messy, muddled and too tentative. And despite the obvious influences of the mainstream producers, Martin and Williams to named a few, the album is surprisingly contained a throwback and distant productions. Sweetener is easily a less earworm but a great grower. The repetitive vocal backdrops instead of using the usual electro or instrumental synths are widely demonstrated in almost half of the record, take blazed, R.E.M, sweetener, successful and borderline as examples. This style is a smart tactic to keep the track sounds busy while retaining the intended impression. It is actually similar to the reggae and hip-hop structures that were widely used back in 2000's, and early 2010's. Even the redundancy of the light is coming and no tears left to cry's lyrical contents still managed to stand out. It isn't the tracks mentioned don't have the "catchiness", but hearing their lyrics in repeat makes the listeners unconsciously remembering the song itself. A very common pop trick, and Cry About It Later by Katy Perry is one of the great examples. While having a featured artist is most album's big gun, that isn't the case with Sweetener. blazed and borderline somewhat have their own potentials, but came off lesser and considerately like fillers. The chill and laid-back production don't help either to make these tracks prominent. Moreover, 2018 wasn't really a good year for pure pop so there is no established sound or bars for Grande to begin with. Conclusively, this is probably the album from Grande that I thoroughly enjoyed and genuinely listen regularly. And if I will rank each tracks, 1 being the song I enjoyed the most and 15 is the least. This will be the list: 1. no tears left to cry 2. everytime 3. R.E.M 4. successful 5. goodnight n' go 6. God is a woman 7. blazed 8. get well soon 9. pete davidson 10. the light is coming 11. sweetener 12. breathin' 13. raindrops (an angel cried) 14. borderline 15. better off Sweetener: 7/10 These are just my thoughts, what about yours?

She became the asset of the record company; with nine No.1 hits on Billboard Hot 100, five Top 10 albums on Billboard Chart 200, and joined the elite 100 Million RIAA Units Achievements, among with four other artists. With the release of her last studio album under Capitol Records, it might also the mark of a whole different phase for Katy Perry. Considering her recent activities after seven weeks of giving birth are quite quizzical; like the surprise release of her retrospective EP, Camp Katy, compiling some of the tracks from each of her records. And the availability of her debut album, Katy Hudson, on streaming services. Some fans theorized the narratives from her fifth album [Smile] has hints of Perry's huge career change in the future. The closing contemporary track, What Makes A Woman, has the ending line of contentment, "There it is, Katheryn", speculating that she will finally leave the pop-oriented persona of Katy Perry, and going back to her real roots as Katheryn Hudson/Katy Hudson. Not to mention that her debut album is released on some streaming services with a separate profile as Katy Hudson instead of Katy Perry. These dilemmas have been subjected since her 2017's livestream, Katy Perry Live: Witness World Wide, which Perry emoted that she doesn't want to see herself as Katy Perry anymore. And in a certain live interview, she revealed that she wanted to keep her blonde hair color because that's really what she is as [Katy Hudson], her natural hair color.
