Badu says BEP’s “Yesterday” music video looks an awful lot like her “Honey” visual.
Erykah Badu: no, no, no, no don’t funk with my video.
Erykah Badu says the Black Eyed Peas’ new music video that premiered on Apple Music last Friday looks awfully familiar to her “Honey” music video off 2008’s New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) record. Badu’s video shows her wandering around a record store and transforming onto the covers. It’s pretty much exactly what happens in the new BEP video (sans Fergie), and unless their video is an ode to Badu (no evidence), it’s a straight rip-off. As StereoGum points out, Badu’s co-directed visual won Best Direction at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, was nominated for three other VMAs, was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video at the 51st Grammy Awards, and won Best Director at the BET Awards. In other words, this wasn’t an oversight.
