Thank you Ice Cube for ruining the surprise.
Ice Cube revealed Dr. Dre is releasing a record, unannounced, Aug. 1.
It’s shaping up to be an “insane” record from Dr. Dre, who’s not released an album of his own since his six-time platinum selling 2001 LP in 1999, and it’s set to drop this Saturday, according to Ice Cube. The two are working side-by-side on N.W.A’s biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” so if anyone knows what’s up… it’s him.
“Dre is dropping an album inspired by the ’Compton’ movie,” Cube told Power 99 when asked about new music on the Straight Outta Compton soundtrack. “He’s dropping something on August 1,” adding “It’s mega. It’s Dr. Dre. It’s what everybody’s been waiting for. It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day. It’s crazy.”
Perhaps Cube meant Dre is dropping the soundtrack to Straight Outta Compton, which hits theaters Aug. 14, versus a solo record. But then, why would Cube say “inspired by?” You may recall Eminem released his executive-produced “Southpaw” soundtrack the day the movie premiered.
During his appearance at Comic Con, “Straight Outta Compton” director F. Gary Grey told MTV News what Dre has planned is bananas.
“Dr. Dre, it took him 15 years to step out and say, ’I want to do music again’ in the way that he’s doing it. The soundtrack is insane. Seriously, it’s incredible,” Gray said. “He went deep and you can hear some of his influences, with jazz and soul and a little bit of funk. And Kendrick Lamar is on, Eminem; a lot of great guest stars…But it’s really Dre and how he’s evolved and how he’s matured as not only a person, but as an artist. It’s deep and it’s great.”
Looks like we’ll have to wait and see.
