Charli XCX and Carly Rae Jepsen Join Forces On ’80s-Tinged Bop “Backseat”

December 15, 2017 By Jordan Miller

Their loneliness is killing them.

Buckle up.

Charli XCX’s star-studded new mixtape titled Pop 2 out today (Dec. 15). It’s an impressive list of features, including MØ, Tove Lo, Mykki Blanco, Chairlift frontwoman Caroline Polacheck, Finnish singer Alma, Dorian Electra, Tommy Cash, A.G. Cook, Jay Park, Kim Petras, Brooke Candy, Cupcakke, Pabllo Vittar and Carly Rae Jepsen. This post is highlighting disco diva Carly Rae’s guest spot on “Backseat,” because it deserves your undivided attention.

On the A. G. Cook and Easyfun-produced track, Charli sings about feeling lonely in a crowd of people.

I can’t escape all the voices, and so, I turn it up / I go to parties with strangers so I can figure it out,” Charli sings over starry production and bouncing synths. “Run through a city at midnight to feel like a star / I want it all, even if it’s fake.”

Carly doubles down on the despair. “I’m wide awake, lyin’ next to him and feel it all / I got a thirst for distraction that I can’t take back,” she sings. “My fingers run through his hair / I’m grippin’ at regrets / I put my mouth on his lips to taste.”

The ’80s-inspired new tune is a Pop 2 highlight. You can listen to the entire mixtape below, but definitely start with “Backseat” first.
