Britney Spears and Mel Gibson are headed to Costa Rica where they will vacation with the singer’s father and Gibson’s wife, a source tells PEOPLE.

“They’re just going away for a few days to relax,” says a source.

The group plan to stay at Gibson’s Costa Rican home. They will be back early next week.

The unlikely pair were first spotted together back in mid-March when they dined at Russian restaurant Romanov in Studio City. However, it wasn’t their first meeting. Gibson and Spears and their families met a number of times after the pop star was hospitalized in February, a different source told PEOPLE at the time.

“Mel and his wife Robin clearly saw a woman in crisis and wanted to extend themselves in any way possible,” the source said.

Gibson and Spears used to be neighbors when the singer previously lived in Malibu. “There are no expectations, there is no agenda,” the source added. “It’s simply an act of human kindness – one neighbor reaching out to the other.”

“The Insider” breaks news that BRITNEY SPEARS and MEL GIBSON are currently en route to Costa Rica on vacation together! Britney arrived on time, about 5 minutes after Mel, and the plane departed at 9:05 a.m.

We spotted them leaving on a private plane to the Central American state early this morning. Sources tell us that Mel is taking Britney and her father JAMIE for a mini-vacation. We’ve learned they will be guests at Mel’s home in Costa Rica.

According to the terms of her custody Britney’s children cannot leave the country without special approval. There is no confirmation as to whether she sought approval and we’re told they are not joining her on the trip.

While the pop star and the actor may appear to be an unlikely duo, they used to live in the same Malibu community and were spotted having dinner together at Studio City’s Romanov restaurant in March.

Forget those rumors of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline getting back together!

The recovering pop star is off and away for a vacation with none other than Mel Gibson, Entertainment Tonight reports.

The two jetted off at 9:05 a.m. this morning to Costa Rica, where Mel has a vacation home. It is believed Brit’s father and co-conservator of her estate, Jamie, has joined them for the trip.

Not along for the ride? Her sons Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, as Britney and K-Fed’s custody arrangement stipulates the pop star cannot leave the country without court approval.

While this pairing is odd, it certainly isn’t the first time Brit and Mel have convened. Malibu neighbors, the two dined at Romanov restaurant back in March, where Mel, 52, was reported to have dispensed some pearls of wisdom on how to deal with negative press to the 26-year-old.

“He understands what she’s going through,” a source told OK!. “And he certainly has advice on how to not let it destroy your life.”

Britney Spears, her father Jamie and actor Mel Gibson boarded a private plane bound for Costa Rica at 9:05 this morning, Entertainment Tonight reported.

Gibson – who has helped people with sobriety issues – is hosting them at his 400-acre ranch in Central America, according to ET.

Spears’ children Sean Preston and Jayden James won’t be joining their mom. According to the the terms of her custody agreement, Spears’ boys can’t leave the country without special approval.

This is not the pop star’s first encounter with the Braveheart actor. The unlikely pals dined at Romanov Russian restaurant & Lounge in Studio City, CA in March.

Britney Spears has found herself a rather unorthodox traveling companion. So to speak.

E! News has confirmed the singer joined Mel Gibson aboard a private jet this morning, bound for Costa Rica. The unlikely, but not unprecedented, duo was joined on their trip by Spears’ father, Jamie, and Gibson’s wife, Robyn. Though the exact nature of the trip is not yet known, it appears to be nothing more than a friendly weekend getaway, with a source telling E! News the group departed from Los Angeles with the intention of hanging out at Gibson’s Costa Rica property “for a couple days.”

The source also told E! News the showbiz pair’s budding relationship has been nurtured of late by attorney Blair Berk, who repped Gibson in his infamous DUI arrest and who is currently representing Spears’ parents in their various legal entanglements. More recently, Gibson has been described as “mentoring” the troubled pop star and that the duo has discussed “a getaway” of some sort. The surprising pair first raised eyebrows last March, when they, along with a group of mutual friends, were spotted dining together at Studio City eatery Romanov. At the time, sources close to both stars denied any professional collaboration, insisting instead that their meeting was “all about sobriety” and that the Gibson clan was simply looking to help the young star.

Judging by her progress made in the past few months, it’s a job well done.
