The bad girl of pop is on top.
After a record-breaking 19 weeks at #1, Lil Nas X’s viral hit “Old Town Road” has officially run its course. 17-year-old Billie Eilish’s infectious dark-pop song “Bad Guy” is the new ruler of the Hot 100.
“Bad Guy” clung to the #2 position for nine weeks. Had it remained there this week, it would have tied the all-time record for the most weeks peaking at #2 (tying Foreigner’s “Waiting For A Girl Like You” and Missy Elliott’s “Work It”). However, it still receives a trophy for being the only song ever to maintain the number two spot for that long then finally take #1.
Billie becomes the first person born in this century to have a #1 single. She’s also the youngest artist to hit #1 since Lorde did when “Royals” hit #1 when she was sixteen-years-old.
As StereoGum points out, there are several contributing factors for why “Bad Guy” finally achieved the coveted status. She re-released it with Justin Bieber, sold it on cassette (an ancient art form for people her age) and shared a vertical video. Also, it’s a phenomenal song.
“Old Town Road” was bumped from #1 to #3. Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes‘ collab “Señorita” climedb up a spot to #2. The two are reportedly seeing each other at the moment – paparazzi consistently capture them kissing and canoodling together. Of course, it’s just coincidence and ~has nothing to do with gaining publicity for their new song to hit #1.~ Let’s see if their liaison can hijack Billie’s first-ever #1 or if Billie can maintain momentum.
