Disney is not allowing Beyonce to overshadow their film by featuring her on most of the soundtrack for The Lion King. The tracklist for the film has arrived, and it features Beyonce on one track: “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” There’s also one that’s TBA, and it appears to be a new Beyonce solo.
The TBA song is track #14, which would place it in between “Reflections of Mufasa” and before “The Battle for Pride Rock” – a perfect time for Nala to sing to Simba before he heads to battle.
The Lion King director, Jon Favreau, had this to say about Nala’s expanded role: “In the original film, her role is not as large as in the stage production, and we definitely drew inspiration, and that was one of the areas where we were going to expand this.”
Favreau also confirmed there’s a new song by Beyonce.
“Yeah, it doesn’t replace anything. We have all the original songs, but there’s a song that she performed and wrote in the spirit of the production along with working with Lebo M., who’s part of it with Hans Zimmer. They were all collaborating with her and helping to bring this new piece of music into a film where there’s already a very established musical personality to the piece. So it was nice of them to have them working with her to allow the new song to feel organically a part of the new production.”
The Lion King hits theaters on July 19, 2019. The 19-song soundtrack drops July 11.
