Awkward… Madonna Rambles About Herself During Aretha Franklin Tribute Speech At The VMAs, UPDATE: Madonna Comments

Madonna’s Aretha Franklin “tribute” speech was tacky.

Madonna’s Aretha Franklin “tribute” speech was tacky.

UPDATE: Madonna commented on the, erm, situation (see below).

I know that’s pop blasphemy, but watching the Queen of Pop blab about herself and only briefly mention Aretha was hard to watch.

Dressed in traditional African garb (why?), Madonna recanted her difficult journey on the path to superstardom. “Not tall enough, not 12-octave range enough, not pretty enough and not enough enough,” Madonna said of herself. “I had no training or dreams but I went for it.” That’s when Madge dived into a story where she audition with a performance of Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” to which she said she knew “every word” by heart.

“None of this would’ve happened, could’ve happened without our lady of soul. She led me to where I am today and I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, in this room tonight, and I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us, R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Long live the queen!”

Her barely there mentions of the Queen of Soul was so distracting, and the Internet backlash is real. I love Madonna, but that was a mess and should have never happened. I know MTV felt pressure to do something in light of Aretha’s passing, but Madonna gabbing about herself is not it.

Watch below:

Im with the Winner!! The beautiful @camila_cabello ! So proud of her! ???. And just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T. ??. I Love Camilla! I love my dress! AND. I love-L O V E!! ♥️ and there is nothing anyone can say or do that will change that. #vmas #postivevibes
