Ariana Grande’s First Performance Of “Thank U, Next” Was Refreshingly Honest

Ariana Grande’s ran the gambit from laughter to almost tears in her debut performance of “thank u, next.”

The pop star’s surprise new tune is smashing streaming records everywhere, and she’s breathin (heh, get it) even more life into with a performance on Ellen.

In it, Ari sings alongside the track’s collaborators, Tayla Parx and Victoria Monet, affront a backdrop meant to look like a wedding. That’s actually quite sad, and it catches Ari off guard several times. Once when she stumbles after singing on a chair, and again when she sings the words, “One day I’ll walk down the aisle, holding hands with my mama.” It almost reduced our fav to tears.

Other than the couple of silly missteps, Ari looks like she’s not taking things too seriously (notice the cheese choreography / mid-song laughs), and after the year she’s had that’s quite alright.
