It’s the most wonderful time of the year… or is it?
Christmas is all about hot cocoa in bed, holiday tunes and… a beefy boyfriend?
Country singer Steve Grand made headlines in 2013 when he released a **** music video for “All-American Boy” that had the gays go ga ga. Aside from playing one-off musical events around the country since, we haven’t heard much from the indie artist, until now. Grand gave his fans an unexpected Christmas gift this holiday with a video for his cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
“I feel really good about it,” Grand tells Billboard, “and hopefully it will spread a lot of warm, holiday cheer.”
“On Thursday [Dec. 17] I was in my basement jamming and I started playing [‘All I Want…’], and I was like, ‘You know what, I should do a Christmas song.’ And then I so I called up Alana [Mulford, Grand’s manager] and my video editor and director [John Lavin], and I was just like, ‘We gotta do this.’”
Grand pressured his team to complete the entire project over the weekend, and the result is a bitter-sweet holiday video showing a gay couple enjoying each other’s company on Christmas, until the viewer realizes it’s all just a fantasy.
“I thought it was a refreshing take on it, because everyone’s used to Mariah Carey’s version,” which Grand calls a “modern classic.” He adds, “Buble’s arrangement is a little different, and my arrangement is even different from his — especially the high notes.”
As for the video’s co-star, Trevor LaPaglia, Grand says he’s only “met a couple times” when he’s visited Los Angeles. “We have some mutual friends. I remembered that he was an actor, so he was my first choice. So I Facebook messaged him and said, ‘What are you doing on Saturday?’ And this was on Friday afternoon. And he’s like, ‘Well, I work… what’s up?’ I said, ‘I want you to be in my music video.’ And so he immediately said, ‘Yeah!’ So he drove out to Palm Springs the next day, and we met out there and made this great video.”
