2016 Juno Awards Recap: The Weeknd Wins Big, Bieber Gets Booed

Watch performances from The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes and more at the Canadian Grammys.

The Canadian equivalent of the Grammys were held in Calgary last night. Here’s what you missed.

Every year, The Juno Awards bring together the biggest names north of the border to celebrate the best in Canadian music.

It was a big night for The Weeknd who took home 5 awards, including Artist of the Year. His album “Beauty Behind the Madness” took home Album of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, while his smash single “Can’t Feel My Face” earned him Single of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

Justin Bieber was also recognized, winning the Juno Fan Choice Award and Pop Album of the Year for “Purpose”. Bieber appeared via video to accept his award, and the audience was apparently not too pleased that he chose to attend the iHeart Awards, instead of the Junos, as they audibly booed following his acceptance video. It’s not the first time Bieber’s been booed and it probably won’t be the last:

Other notable winners include Adele’s 25 for International Album of the Year, Alessia Cara for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Walk Off the Earth for Group of the Year. You can see a full list of last night’s winners here.

Check out some of last night’s most noteworthy performances:

The Weeknd – “Acquainted” and “Might Not”

Shawn Mendes – “Stitches”

Lights and Sam – “Running With the Boys”

Alessia Cara – “Here” and “Wild Things”

Shawn Hook – “Sound of Your Heart”
