Zayn Malik Announced As The New Designer of Versus Versace


Zayn Malik is the new designer for Versus Versace.

Versus Versace – the younger, hipper, streetwise sister to the Versace house – has finally chosen a new creative director following the departure of Anthony Vaccarello earlier this year, and pop’s favorite bad-boy got the job.

Despite not being a designer, Zayn was handpicked by Donatella Versace to design and face future campaigns, telling the New York Times: “it is all about rebellion. For me, Zayn was the perfect fit.”

The first collection, Zayn X Versus, is a capsule collection of men and women’s clothing that will be previewed for Spring 2017 and made available in Versus stores and online from May.

Donatella Versace revealed, despite her initial distaste for One Direction, she handpicked the “TiO” singer after meeting him several times with his model girlfriend Gigi Hadid.

“I was not exactly a fan of that band,” she said. “Then I met him again when he started to date Gigi, and he impressed me very much — he was so mature, so thoughtful, treated her like such a gentleman. He told me how much he loved fashion. It was then I knew he was the right face for what I had in mind.”

Malik, the 23-year-old singer, gave a rare interview to the NY Times about the huge collaboration:

“I think Versus has always been a very cool brand and is a great brand for me and for people in my generation. I’ve always wanted to design clothes and there’s no brand I’d rather design for than Versus. I like to learn about things I’m interested in and I enjoy being around creative people so I think it will be cool. The bonus is that I get to collaborate with Donatella, whom I love and admire. I know we’ll create something amazing.”

The legendary fashion house is keen to use Zayn’s eye to cater to millennial buyers but no price range has been revealed to find if any millennials can afford it. However, the Versus line will be “loud” and “rebellious”.

Zayn confirmed the news on his Twitter earlier today with a distorted video of the brand’s iconic logo, featuring a robotized voice, saying “It is time to enter the new phase of the Versus experience.”
