Zayn Malik received a nomination in the Music Artist of the Year category at the British LGBT Awards.
"The British LGBT Awards are vital in highlighting those who have done good by the LGBT community and are also important in promoting LGBT acceptance," said the award show's founder Sarah Garrett. The site nominated Malik because of his outlook on sexuality, highlighting a quote from 2014 when he said: “just be yourself. If that’s who you are, that’s who you are and don’t be afraid to be the person that you are.”
Last year, Malik addressed rumors fans may or may not have invented that several members in the band were secretly dating.
“There’s no secret relationships going on with any of the band members,” Malik said. “It’s not funny, and it still continues to be quite hard for them. They won’t naturally go put their arm around each other because they’re conscious of this thing that’s going on, which is not even true. They won’t do that natural behavior. But it’s just the way the fans are. They’re so passionate, and once they get their head around an idea, that’s the way it is regardless of anything. If it wasn’t for that passionate, like, almost obsession, then we wouldn’t have the success that we had.”
Malik is up against Adele, Jess Glynne, Halsey, Little Mix, Frank Ocean, Sam Smith and Years and Years.
Lady Gaga, Cher, Bette Midler and Hillary Clinton received nominations in the award show's Global Icon category.
