UPDATE: See their new video message.
UPDATE // JULY 8: The rumors are true. Three of the five Spice Girls are planning a return. They shared a new video today (July 8) which marks the 20th anniversary since their debut and are now going under the monicker GEM (Geri, Emma, Mel). Meh.
EARLIER // JULY 7:
Why We Need Another Spice Girls Reunion
Several months before that, Mel B told Billboard a reunion tour was "potentially" happening. "Once we sort everything out we make an announcement, but right now we're just figuring it all out. Next year is your 20 anniversary so we're really just trying to make sure something happens... Hmm. I remember things like it was yesterday and we're still really good friends, but it definitely still feels like we've done stuff a long time ago because music has changed so much. But we had so much fun and we did the Olympics a few years ago. We're going to have fun if everything works out -- which hopefully it will -- for next year."
Well, she's getting her wish. Sort of.
In a recent interview with Lorraine , Mel B said they're still "in talks right now," but that she "had a nice cup of tea with Geri and Emma... which was lovely.”
That cup of tea might have actually been a recording studio session.
During that cup of tea timeframe, music artists Astronomyy and Sarah Close Tweeted that they had met with the Spice Girls in the studio. Close said, “The Spice Girls are in the studio next door to me,” but later deleted it.
Does this mean the Spice Girls are reuniting without Victoria Beckham and Mel C?!
Possibly. A new report from The Sun claims Mel B, Emma and Geri are planning their comeback performance at London's Hyde Park in July of 2017.
“It gives them a year to plan everything and make sure their comeback is spectacular," a source tells the tabloid. "It would be the most-talked about gig of the year.”
When asked of the rumors, Mel B said: “I am keeping tight-lipped. There are lots of discussions going on. Right now I am in the studio working on my own album and that is my focus. I’m taking it slowly.”
What we really really want is a Spice Girls reunion with all of the ladies' involvement.Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case. Mel B is orchestrating a Spice Girls reunion and tour leading up to the girls' 20th anniversary since their debut with "Wannabe" back in 1996. During an appearance on the U.K.'s Alan Carr's New Year's Specstacular last year, Scary Spice hinted whether the '90s queens would reconvene on stage. "I think I'm the one putting all the rumors out there," she said. "To be serious, it is our 20th anniversary this year and it would be rude not to celebrate. So hopefully something will be happening pretty soon ... I can't tell you what it is yet."
