Simon Cowell tried talking Zayn Malik out of leaving the band.
Simon Cowell does the best damage control ever.
Cowell, who assembled the boys as a band on The X Factor in 2010, appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden to chat about One Direction's recent shake-up after former bandmate Zayn Malik decided to leave.
"[I was] ready to jump off a cliff," the mogul said when asked his initial reaction to the split. “I was trying to say to him he should stay around a bit longer. But something inside him said he’d had enough.”
To no avail. Instead, he focused on making sure the rest of the band, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, were handling it alright.
“I dealt with it then I made sure the guys were OK – because they were shocked as well. So I had to respect his decision. For the boys it was interesting because they were in the middle of these live shows at the time,” he said.
And then just like that, Cowell went on to say how amazing the boys performed after the news broke Malik left despite the hardship behind-the-scenes. And that my friends, is a professional spin machine.
