Selena Gomez Is Re-Releasing ‘Revival’ On Cassette

Is this really the best idea?

Selena Gomez is an executive producer of Netflix's record breaking new show 13 Reasons Why. She also contributed a song for the series, a cover of Yazoo's 1982 hit "Only You." Her version transforms the original into a moody, melodic piece. Understandably so, because it's meant to soundtrack the lives of a group of devastated teens who are forced to face their wrongdoing to their classmate Hannah Baker (played by Australian actress Katherine Langford), who commits suicide after a series of traumatizing events pushes her passed the point of no return. Before taking her life, Hannah records a series of cassette tapes that brings to light the people that abused, neglected and hurt her to the point of no return. The show faced backlash for seemingly glamorizing suicide because it appears that Hannah gains power from her death, and that could send a mixed message to impressionable teens viewing the show without parental guidance.

Gomez recently announced a second season is in the works. She is also re-releasing her most-recent album Revival on cassette. It's available for pre-order and is expected to ship around June 23.

Selena Gomez Is Counting Down to Something Big

Should she do this? From a business standpoint, yes, but out of principle it's actually disturbing. In the show, the tapes were a prop to detail a young girl's death. Although it wasn't the intention, some could argue that Selena putting her music on this medium as a way to connect her work with the series IS glamorizing suicide.

What's worse is the official fan club's Tweet to fans. "Selenators, here's your tape." In the show, Hannah would address each person on a tape in the same fashion. It's all a bit repulsive, but get out your debit card I guess.

Their story isn't over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.
