Sam Smith Is Recording The James Bond “Spectre” Theme Song

Smith. Sam Smith.

Earlier this summer, the press unanimously agreed Smith should tackle the theme song for the latest James Bond installment, but things took a turn when the “Stay With Me” singer mentioned he heard Ellie Goulding was taking it on.

“I actually have no idea,” Smith said in July when asked who was singing it. “People seem to think I’m doing it but I have absolutely no idea what’s going on. I’m being deadly serious!

When asked if he thinks he would have recorded it by now if you he actually doing it, Smith responded “I really think I would know by now! I heard Ellie Goulding was going to do it, I heard loads of different things.”

Oh really?

“Yeah, it’s definitely not me… I’d love to do it. I’d love to do it. I don’t know. I’d just love to do it but it’d be a dream to do, wouldn’t it?”

It appears Smith’s dreams came true, because on Monday (Sep. 7), Smith posted a photo on Instagram of his hand wearing a ring with the film’s logo.

The film’s director, Sam Mendes, said earlier this summer the theme song had already been recorded and sounded “fantastic,” adding fans wouldn’t have to “wait long” to discover who received the honor. Perhaps Smith’s mention to Goulding was just to throw us off his scent?

UPDATE: Sam Smith just confirmed the news on Twitter, his Bond song is titled Writing’s On The Wall & is already available for pre-order:
