Twitter speaks out against Meghan Trainor's Grammy nomination.
The 2016 Grammy nominations were announced this morning and, as always, they've not been uncontroversial. Between Taylor Swift's outstanding eleven nods and pop favorites like Demi Lovato and One Direction being snubbed (again), no one is wholly satisfied with the roster for this year's most prestigious evening in music.
It's Meghan Trainor, however, who's baring the brunt of this year's backlash and the "All About That Bass" singer found herself a top trending topic on Twitter this morning as people expressed their fury over her nod for Best New Artist. Much like last year's furor around Iggy Azalea's nominations, people have been quick to take to social media to slam the star and sound off about who they think was more deserving of the accolade.
Check out what people have been saying on Twitter:
Meghan Trainor was nominated for a Grammy though. Where is the logic in that?— Coco (@ysIgod) December 7, 2015
if anti-feminist, body shaming, problematic meghan trainor wins a single grammy i will be severely disappointed— mermoney christmas (@lilwaynker) December 7, 2015
Grammy worthy artists: The Weeknd: Lyrical Art. Lana Del Rey: Lyrical Art. Non-Grammy Worthy artists: Meghan: Trainor— Oi Oiiii Tommo! (@MeL0UAndTheMoon) December 7, 2015
Whilst One Direction's fans led the charge, Lana Del Rey, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato stans were quick to express their fury as well.
Meghan may have had a meteoric rise to fame, but there's certainly merit to people's confusion about her nod, especially given the potentially problematic nature of her 'body positive' lyrics and some of her more misguided comments.
