M.I.A. and Zayn wrote a new song together... using mobile messaging service WhatsApp.
M.I.A.'s new album AIM drops this Friday (August 12), and it's shaping up to be her best (and possibly last) album to date. The indie-alternative-pop star put forth her Skrillex-produced lead single "Go Off" last month and announced she has a new tune with Diplo titled "Bird Song" (which is slightly confusing considering the two worked together on her 2010 record Maya but had a public feud on Twitter just last year), and there's another super star added to the list: Zayn Malik.
EW reports the two worked on a song titled "Freedun" together.
“That’s the song we mastered yesterday,” M.I.A. said, adding that she worked on the cut with Malik remotely. “We just basically did it while I was here, because I’ve been here for a week-and-a-half. We’ve just been going back and forth on, you know, WhatsApp.”
“We have the same publishers and they wanted me to demo some songs for Zayn,” she added. “Before I started writing properly my own stuff [for AIM], I was thinking maybe I’ll write for other people instead. I really wanted to write a song for Zayn….We had a couple people in common. And that’s how it came about. I didn’t really approach him for my own record until later on. First, I thought I wanted to try writing a song for him.”
