Ahead of her performance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, Lorde dropped a new song titled "Liability" off her forthcoming album Melodrama (out June 16).
"I'm really proud of this bit of songwriting. I feel like I got somewhere which I hadn't been before," she told Apple Music's Zane Lowe. "It's interesting because I had this realization, 'because of my lifestyle, what I do for work. There's going to be a point with every single person around me where I am going to be a tax on them in some way... it was this moment of sadness, and I remember it so vividly." She recalls listening to Rihanna's ANTi song "Higher" alone in a cab and beginning to cry. "I was just like, 'it's always going to be this way.' But the song turned into a bit of a protective talisman."
She describes "Liability" as "starkly truthful."
