UPDATE: Warner Bros has green lit A Star Is Born, Deadline reports. Production begins early next year in California, but even more exciting? Gaga will compose and perform new music for the film.
EARLIER // JUNE 16:
Lady Gaga might star co-star in Warner Bros remake of A Star Is Born.
Rumors ran rampant earlier this year when Beyonce’s name suddenly became attached to the role that Gaga is vying for, but Cooper shot that down. “Just a rumor,” Cooper said at the time. “But with that said, I would be honored obviously with to work with her in any capacity.”
Interestingly, Gaga’s name is now the one tossed around for the role, among others. Russell Crowe, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio were all rumored to take the male lead when Clint Eastwood was in charge of directing it, but when Eastwood took on other projects and Beyoncé declined, he handed the reins to Cooper.
The paparazzi photos of Gaga riding shotgun with Cooper was a test, and the studio loved their chemistry.
ust watch these two turn up together here and there as Cooper gets serious about making this film. He’s got offers in other places to make his directing debut, and it’s a priority for him after learning a lot at the side of Clint Eastwood in the making of American Sniper. Cooper produced that film, which was brought in at a reasonable budget. A Star Is Born will probably cost $30 million..
This would mark Gaga’s next big acting gig since her award winning role as The Countess on American Horror Story: Hotel, which she’s returning to for another season. Gaga is also recording a second jazz album with Tony Bennett and a solo pop record.
A Star Is Born was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, then again in 1976 with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand.
Gaga would rock this role! The movie sounds like a stellar stepping stone for the singing chanteuse to land other dramatic Hollywood roles and continue her reign as one of the most polarizing fixtures in pop culture.
