Lady Gaga's legal team claims Dr. Luke is using her star power to draw more attention to his case in the ongoing legal battle against Kesha.
Kesha has had somewhat of a rebirth this summer. She’s making the news for her music again, and that’s really refreshing. Unfortunately, she still has legal business to attend to. The pop star is embroiled in a seemingly endless legal battle with producer Dr. Luke, whom she claims raped her. She wants out of her recording contract with Kemosabe Records, an imprint label with Sony.
It appears the public has sided with Kesha, but the defamed producer is doing his damnedest to prove his case. Over the weekend, Luke’s legal team subpoenaed Lady Gaga for a deposition in the case.
According to TMZ, Luke’s council says Gaga is refusing to be deposed in the case and wants a judge to force her to.
“Dr. Luke’s counsel served a subpoena on Lady Gaga because she has relevant information regarding, among other things, false statements about Dr. Luke made to her by Kesha,” said Dr. Luke’s lawyer in a statement on Saturday. “This motion has become necessary because Dr. Luke’s counsel has not been able to obtain, despite repeated request, a deposition date from Lady Gaga.” They want to grill the singer for up to three hours.
Gaga already provided a written statement to Dr. Luke, but he claims that’s not good enough. The point of contention? Text messages between Kesha and Gaga. TMZ says it includes Kesha saying she’d been abused by Dr. Luke and encouraged Gaga to join a ”smear campaign against [Dr. Luke]." They add that campaign included Gaga urging Sony Music to drop Dr. Luke and promote the #FreeKesha campaign on social media.
Gaga provided copy of the texts, but apparently it was severely redacted and thus incomprehensible.
On Saturday, Gaga’s legal reps hit back. “As Lady Gaga‘s legal team will present to the court, she has provided all of the relevant information in her possession and is at most an ancillary witness in this process,” a representative for Gaga said in a statement to Variety. “Dr. Luke’s team is attempting to manipulate the truth and draw press attention to their case by exaggerating Lady Gaga‘s role and falsely accusing her of dodging reasonable requests.”
Good luck catching her! Gaga embarks on the Joanne World Tour this week.
