It’s been 13 years since Kelly was crowned the first winner of American Idol and she is officially free from her recording contract.
With the release of her 7th album, Piece by Piece, Clarkson is now a free agent. She’s been open about her troubled relationship with RCA record label boss Clive Davis, so she probably won’t be resigning there.
After Davis released his tell-all memoir slamming Clarkson she let her feelings be known.
“[Clive said] I was a "sh*tty writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me." He continued on about how … I should just shut up and sing. This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with.”
Kelly shouldn’t be worried about record label interest; she’s still a staple of Top 40 radio with three number one albums and has sold over 13 million records.
Rumors are swirling that Clarkson is setting her sights on Big Machine Label Group, Taylor Swift’s record label. That might be the best place for her since she recently revealed in a Time Magazine interview that she is already working on a country album.
“I’ve actually been creating … a country one and this one at the same time. I’ve been working on both projects simultaneously…I will have a country album that will come out. “
This could be a risky move since country radio is currently dominated by Miranda Lambert and fellow Idol alum Carrie Underwood.
I think Kelly should return to her angsty My December roots and create another powerful record that her core fans love. She has a strong voice that is instantly recognizable on Top 40 radio and it would be sad to see her go. On the upside, we’d get to see her perform at one of the 5,000 country music award shows every year.
