Are we crazy?
Katy Perry's new Max Maritn-produced song she co-wrote with Sia is asking all the right questions. Its political undertones are cleverly wrapped in disco/reggae-tinged production, but the meaning isn't lost on the millions of people who streamed it on day one.
"Chained" instantly connected to the masses, thus breaking a record on Spotify. According to EW, "Chained To The Rhythm" clocked in 3,062,293 streams in its first day on the platform, breaking the record on Spotify for being the most streamed single by a female artist in one day.
Elsewhere, reports claim "Chained" had a first-day audience impression was 27.735 million combined with other platforms like YouTube and Apple Music.
Curiously, the song failed to top the iTunes Top Songs chart following Lady Gaga's Super Bowl Halftime Show. It currently sits at No. 4 behind Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" (which bumps back to No. 1 following his performance of it on SNL), then Taylor Swift and Zayn's "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" song off the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack and Gaga's "Million Reasons" at No. 4. However, that could all change tonight when Katy takes the stage at the Grammys to perform it.
