The VSFS is crumbling before our very eyes. Rumor had it Taylor Swift and Katy Perry would perform at the VSFS in China this month. The report is half true. The Reputation singer was never confirmed, but Perry made the cut. That is, until China did a little investigating and found something to their disliking.
According to Page Six, Perry tried applying for a visa to enter the communist nation, but was denied by Chinese officials. Why? A dress she wore in 2015 with sunflowers on it during a performance in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Yep. I’ll let them explain:
“Her outfit wound up causing widespread outrage because the sunflower had been adopted the year before by anti-China protesters,” Page Six reports. They also add Perru waved a Taiwanese flag during the show. Taiwan and China has had conflict over independence for years.
“She was initially granted a visa to perform at the VS show in Shanghai, then Chinese officials changed their minds and yanked her visa,” a source explained. “For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social-media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country. Maroon 5 was banned a few years ago because one band member wished the Dalai Lama happy birthday on Twitter.”
And for the record, super-models Gigi Hadid, Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova were also denied entry reportedly due to social media posts.
They’ve got Harry Styles though, so good luck with that!
