Almost No Women Were Nominated In The Main Categories At The AMAs

Recommended Posts

See the full list of nominees.

Nominations for the 2017 American Music Awards were announced today, and only a handful of women were nominated in the main categories.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the music awards show, which takes place in L.A. on Nov. 19.

Bruno Mars leads with eight nominations, including Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, and Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock. The Chainsmokers, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd tied with five nominations each. Justin Bieber, Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi received four nominations each. Additionally, Keith Urban earned three nominations.

The Artist of the Year nominees are Bruno Mars, The Chainsmokers, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran.

Where are all the women? It's a sad fact, but men dominated the charts this year. "American Music Awards nominees are based on key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard Magazine and on Billboard.com, including album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring," the AMAs say in a press release. "These measurements are tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound."

Julia Michaels lands in the New Artist of the Year category, but other than that women only make an appearance in the categories for… women.

Halsey agrees.

Voting for Artist of the Year opened today and will close on Thursday, November 16 at 8:59:59pm PT. Voting for all other editorial categories closes on Monday, November 13 at 8:59:59am PT.

This wasn't a good year for female artists.

Like out of everyone I think Halsey deserved to be nominated. (I know she isn't liked here) but she is one of the only pop females that had a great year. Also Kesha deserves a nom for her album. It did well also.

Those are the only two that come to mind that deserve it.

Um.. what is she talking about?  Yes it's unfortunate, but it's not even bad there's still many female nominees here.  If you look at the actual charts this year, these were exactly the songs/artists that were popular on the charts this year.  The awards should be based on the charts, not on filling some gender quota.  (And yes I'm a woman and wish more females released more quality music, but unfortunately the music industry as a whole sucks right now with no more timeless classics).

Alot of great female musicians/artist released material this past year. Their music unfortunately just wasn't played on the "radio" or given mainstream attention. That's why I find a good number of these awards shows pointless at this point.

I know SZA's album was acclaimed and I liked Kehlani but she did get nominated.

Who else though? I'm trying to remember all the albums

Along with SZA's, I personally loved Dawn Richards Infrared Deluxe Edition and the imo brilliant  Redemption. All amazing displays of progressive R&B artistry.

I feel Solange A Seat at the Table should be just as recognized  as  Beyonce's Lemonade (both had equally brilliant efforts musically). Both are equal perspectives and view points. Beyonce just had the mega machine behind her.

Kelela is another artist I feel deserved more attention in '17.

I am surprised Halsey wasn't recognized more for Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.

I enjoyed Lordes Melodrama as much as most  of the veteran artist this year.

The AMA list of nominees has alot of artist who have worked hard and produced great material in the past year (Kendrick). But I feel alot of female artist have produced equal material and we're ignored by mainstream.
