Beyonce’s Peabody Award For ‘Lemonade’ Makes History

2 posts in this topic

Grammys who?

Beyonce continues to break barriers.

She may not have won Album of the Year at the Grammys, but Beyonce is taking home another prestigious honor. Her visual album for Lemonade is one of only seven entertainment winners (out of 60 finalists) announced by the Peabody Awards board of jurors today (April 20).

Wait, what is a Peabody Award anyway? Per E! News, it recognizes excellence in television, radio and digital broadcasting. There's a gala event on May 20 in New York for the winners, which will air on PBS and Fusion on June 2.

Variety points out why this is so important:
“Lemonade” draws from the prolific literary, musical, cinematic, and aesthetic sensibilities of black cultural producers to create a rich tapestry of poetic innovation. The audacity of its reach and fierceness of its vision challenges our cultural imagination, while crafting a stunning and sublime masterpiece about the lives of women of color and the bonds of friendship seldom seen or heard in American popular culture.

Her win makes history. Beyonce is the first black female artist to win a Peabody Award, and the second female artist of all time (only behind Barbra Streisand). That is huge.

Highly doubt Queen B will attend considering she's got two buns in the oven, but congrats nonetheless. She deserves this!
