Even before Hurricane Katrina devastated her home state of Louisiana, Britney Spears, 23, was feeling overwhelmed, just weeks away from the birth of her first child, which is expected by September 13.
"Britney was struggling to keep it together," a source close to the pop star tells Celebrity Living. While the disaster's aftermath has shocked us all, "Britney is now facing the trauma of seeing the landscape of her childhood destroyed," explained the insider.
"First she had to deal with the stress of making sure all of her family and friends were okay," says the source. "But then she switches on the TV and sees all the suffering and people reduced to behaving like animals in her own backyard - and she had a hard time coming to grips with that. She kept shaking her head and saying, 'This can't be happening. This can't be happening.' It was total disbelief." Britney issued a statement on her website, sending her prayers to victims affected along the Gulf Coast. "All of my family members there are safe, and thank you to all my fans for your concern," wrote the Toxic star who was raised in Kentwood,Louisiana, just 80 miles from New Orleans. While she hasn't announced a donation to Hurricane Katrina victims yet, she reportedly did donate $366,000 after 9/11.
On Wednesday, September 1, Britney called hubby Kevin Federline, 27, at the studio where he's recording his rap album and told him to stop whatever he was doing and come home immediately," the source says. Federline, who's been burying himself in his recording schedule - "to keep his mind off everything," according to the source - "knew immediately from the sound of Britney's voice that the request was non-negotiable." He sped back to their new Malibu mansion and found his wife sobbing hysterically.
"It took her a good while to calm down. She was in a pretty bad state, just glued to the television all morning and speaking on the phone to Jamie Lynn,14, and her mom" back in Kentwood. K.Fed seems to be getting the messagethat Brit needs his support more than ever during this painful time. Having a baby is wonderful - but losing your home turf is worse than many of us can imagine.
