Co-writer of "Bitch Better Have My Money" Bibi Bourelly has spoken out about the similarities between Rihanna's track and "Betta Have My Money" by Just Brittany.
She didn't have anything particularly intelligent or enlightening to say, but she spoke out nonetheless.
In an email to Vibe magazine, the 20 year old songwriter opened up about the comparisons:
"It's like you dedicate [your] entire life to something, you know? You fight for something and actually put the work in, and sacrifice time, like your parents told you to do in order to be 'successful,' just so when you finally reach a victory and it's time to celebrate, some obstacle is there to pull you back down again. But that's life, I guess."
Rather than actually addressing the substantial similarities between the songs, it seems that Bourelly is throwing herself quite the pity party. Which, in fairness, may be justified because should this go to court, everyone involved could find themselves in some serious hot water.
She did, however, observe that the phrase "bitch better have my money" has been doing the Hip-Hop rounds since "before [her] time", which could account for the lyrical similarities between the songs.
She went on to say:
"I don’t want to bash anybody or be bitter or mean. I just want to be able to celebrate our victory. A lot of things change when one is granted success, random people pop up, and a lot of the adjustments are rough. My way of coping with them is through focusing on the things that I have accomplished and the things that are yet to come."
Rihanna has yet to comment on the unfortunate situation, but let's hope that if she does, she'll have a more compelling statement than Bibi's.
You can listen to both songs here and make your own mind up, if you're so inclined.
